Post race recovery…
One of the most important yet most underrated aspects of performance is what you do AFTER your run. Proper post-exercise recovery is a multifaceted approach that includes cooling down, hydration, nutrition, rest, and monitoring. Tailoring these strategies to the individual needs of each horse will help maintain their health and performance levels.
Cool down- Following exertion, its essential to walk your horse for 10-15 minutes to gradually decrease heart rate and respirations to baseline levels.
Hydration- Ensure that your horse has access to fresh, clean water immediately after post exercise cool down. Electrolyte solutions can also help replenish lost minerals, especially if your horse doesn’t drink well on the road or the temperatures are hot.
Muscle care- Muscle stiffness is decreased significantly by stretching your horse after walking for the full 15 minutes post exercise. Massage, cold hosing, and liniment/ poultice may be beneficial as well, depending on your horse’s specific needs.
Nutrition- offer high quality forage and grain based on your horse’s specific needs. Check out our previous blog post for more details regarding feeding strategies.
Rest- It is important to allow your horse’s muscles to heal following intense exertion by scheduling rest days or low intensity rides following competition.
Additional considerations- Your veterinarian, equine chiropractor, and certified equine therapist can provide recommendations specific to your horse’s individual needs. Reach out to these knowledgeable professionals with any questions you have.
